Abasto Carlos Gardel: The Newest Tango Show in Buenos Aires

Abasto Carlos Gardel is the newest tango dinner show in Buenos Aires, opening on 26 November 2026 in the Abasto area of Balvanera, with shows Monday to Saturday. It brings tango back to the historic building of the former Esquina Carlos Gardel, now fully restored in 1920s Art Deco style. Dinner starts at 7:15 pm, the 75-minute show at 8:30 pm, and tickets start at US$79 per person.

At Official Buenos Aires Tango, helping travellers find the right tango show is all we do. We follow every venue in the city, from the intimate tanguerías of San Telmo to the big dinner-show theatres. So when a new show opens on one of the most legendary corners in tango history, we pay close attention.

Our verdict in one line: Abasto Carlos Gardel is the show to book if you want a grand, theatre-style tango night without a late finish. It starts about an hour earlier than most classic tango houses, and it is the first tango show in Buenos Aires with private lounge seating.

A legendary tango corner, reborn in 1920s Art Deco style

For anyone who knows tango, this address needs no introduction. Abasto Carlos Gardel opens on the corner of Carlos Gardel and Anchorena, right across from the Abasto Shopping centre, in the neighbourhood where Gardel himself grew up.

The corner was once home to the Chanta Cuatro, a bar and restaurant founded in 1893 where Carlos Gardel used to dine, sing and stay up late with friends. The city later declared the site of cultural interest. For decades it then housed the well-known Esquina Carlos Gardel tango show, which closed several years ago and left the building empty.

We were glad to hear new owners had bought the property, because they did not just reopen it. They renovated it from top to bottom into a 1920s Art Deco interior finished down to the last detail, from the lighting and woodwork to the table settings.

The show hall is a true theatre, with a main floor (platea), balconies looking down on a large stage, and room for about 150 guests. That is an intimate size for a show of this scale, so you sit close to the dancers wherever you are.

And the setting adds to the experience. Gardel’s former home, now the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel, is a few blocks away, and his statue stands in the pedestrian Pasaje Carlos Gardel right outside.

How the evening works

Abasto Carlos Gardel follows the classic Buenos Aires dinner-and-show format: dinner first, then the show in the same venue. Here is how a typical night runs.

Time Dinner & Show guests Show-only guests
from 6:40 pm Hotel pickup starts (if you added the shuttle) —
7:10 pm Arrive (5 minutes before opening is ideal) —
7:15 pm Doors open, check in at reception, shown to your table —
7:15–7:30 pm Latest relaxed arrival time for the full dinner experience —
7:15–8:15 pm Three-course dinner with unlimited drinks —
from 7:50 pm — Hotel pickup starts (if you added the shuttle)
8:15 pm — Arrive and check in
8:30 pm Show starts Show starts
9:45–10:00 pm Show ends, shuttle back to your hotel Show ends, shuttle back or a late dinner nearby

One thing many first-time visitors don’t expect: dinner is not served as a group. You check in at reception, a host walks you to your table, and your waiter serves your table personally. Your meal starts when you sit down, not when the room is full.

Our expert tip: arrive about 5 minutes before the 7:15 pm opening, and no later than 15 minutes after it. At dinner shows in Buenos Aires, guests who arrive late often end up rushing dessert just as the lights go down. Arrive on time and you enjoy all three courses calmly before the curtain rises.

The dinner: a three-course Argentine menu with unlimited drinks

Dinner & Show tickets include a three-course menu of traditional Argentine cooking, with unlimited water, red or white wine, beer and soft drinks. Expect the dishes we’d recommend any visitor try at least once in Buenos Aires:

  • Starter: empanadas, Argentina’s classic baked pastries
  • Main course: bife de chorizo, the Argentine sirloin steak, or pasta
  • Dessert: flan with dulce de leche

A vegetarian option is on the menu.

Our expert tip: let us know about allergies or other dietary needs when you book, so the kitchen can prepare in advance.

The show: 75 minutes of stage tango with a live orchestra

The show runs about 1 hour 15 minutes, with four professional tango couples, a live orchestra and tango singers.

We often hear travellers say they have “already seen tango” on the street in San Telmo or Caminito. Street tango is charming, but it is a different thing. Here you watch professional dancers in tightly choreographed numbers, with costumes, staging and lighting that turn tango from a social dance into a full theatre production.

It is the grand, spectacular side of tango, performed a few steps from the corner where Carlos Gardel once sang for his friends.

The Private Lounge: a first for tango shows in Buenos Aires

Abasto Carlos Gardel is the first tango show in Buenos Aires to offer private lounge seating, and it is the feature we are most excited about.

With a Private Lounge ticket you have your own private table for dinner. When the show begins, you move to your own lounge area: comfortable armchairs with a low private table, set apart for your party. The lounge is limited to 12 guests in total, spread across the main floor and the balcony.

Our expert tip: the Private Lounge is our first recommendation for honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals. With only 12 places per night, book it as early as you can.

Tickets and prices: which option should you choose?

Abasto Carlos Gardel tickets range from US$79 per person for the show only to US$250 for the Private Lounge. Children up to and including 11 years old get 50% off.

Ticket Includes Price per adult Child (up to 11)
Show only Standard Show US$79 US$39.50
Show only VIP Show from better seats US$135 US$67.50
Dinner & Show Standard 3-course dinner, unlimited drinks, show US$110 US$55
Dinner & Show VIP 3-course dinner, unlimited drinks, show from better seats US$170 US$85
Private Lounge Private dinner table, unlimited drinks, private lounge seating for the show (max. 12 guests per night) US$250 US$125

Which ticket do we recommend?

  • First time at a tango show: Dinner & Show Standard gives you the full experience at a good price.
  • You want the best view: go VIP. VIP tickets always come with better seats, and the difference is most noticeable in a theatre with balconies.
  • A special occasion: the Private Lounge, for the privacy and comfort you won’t find at any other show in the city.
  • You’d rather eat elsewhere: show only, with dinner after the show (see our tips below).

When you book through Official Buenos Aires Tango, you get the best available price and free cancellation up to 24 hours before the show, which the venue’s own website does not offer. You can also add a round-trip hotel shuttle while booking.

Location and how to get there

Abasto Carlos Gardel is on the corner of Carlos Gardel and Dr. Tomás Manuel de Anchorena (C1215AAB), in the Abasto area of Balvanera, right across from the Abasto Shopping centre.

This is one of the location’s underrated strengths. The venue sits roughly in the middle of the city’s main hotel areas: the historic centre (San Nicolás, Retiro), Puerto Madero and San Telmo on one side, and Palermo on the other. Wherever you stay, it is an easy ride.

Coming from Best way to get there
Historic centre (San Nicolás, Microcentro, Retiro) Metro Line B to Carlos Gardel station, a short walk from the venue
Palermo, Recoleta Taxi or Uber
Puerto Madero, San Telmo Taxi or Uber, or the metro to Line B
Any hotel Add the shuttle when you book

Our expert tip: if you’d rather not deal with taxis at night, add the shuttle. A driver picks you up at your hotel and brings you back after the show. Pickup starts from 6:40 pm for Dinner & Show tickets and from 7:50 pm for show-only tickets.

Abasto Carlos Gardel vs other tango shows: our honest take

The biggest difference is the timing. Abasto Carlos Gardel starts its show at 8:30 pm, while classic tango houses such as La Ventana, El Viejo Almacén and El Querandí start around 9:30–10:00 pm.

Abasto Carlos Gardel Classic tango houses (La Ventana, El Viejo Almacén, El Querandí)
Show starts 8:30 pm around 9:30–10:00 pm
Show ends around 9:45–10:00 pm around 11:00 pm or later
Show days Monday to Saturday Varies by venue
Private lounge seating Yes, a first in Buenos Aires No
Venue Renovated 1920s Art Deco theatre, about 150 guests Varies by venue

We recommend Abasto Carlos Gardel if you:

  • have an early tour, flight or Iguazú trip the next morning
  • are travelling with children
  • like to start your evening earlier but still want a grand tango spectacle
  • want a more exclusive night in the Private Lounge
  • are staying in Palermo or the centre and want a venue in between

You may prefer another show if you:

  • want to see tango on a Sunday, when Abasto Carlos Gardel is closed
  • love the late-night Buenos Aires rhythm and want to finish close to midnight
  • prefer a long-established show with years of reviews behind it

Our insider tips before you go

  1. Show only? Eat after the show, not before. This is the mistake we see most often. Show-only guests need to arrive by 8:15 pm, but most Buenos Aires restaurants only open around 8:00 pm. The show ends around 9:45–10:00 pm, which is a perfectly normal dinner time in Buenos Aires, and the Abasto area has plenty of options.
  2. Arrive on time for dinner. Aim for 5 minutes before the 7:15 pm opening, and at the latest 15 minutes after.
  3. Dress smart casual. Think nice trousers or a dress and clean shoes. Beachwear is not recommended.
  4. Book early for the opening weeks. With about 150 seats and only 12 Private Lounge places per night, a brand-new show fills up quickly.
  5. Remember there are no shows on Sunday. Planning a Sunday night out? Pick another evening for Abasto Carlos Gardel.
  6. Book with free cancellation. Travel plans change; booking through Official Buenos Aires Tango lets you cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.
